I had recently taken part in a slam poetry competition at school. I wrote a slam poem on ‘Peer Pressure’, a topic I have talked about numerous times before and hence, thought it would be a good idea to share with all of you!
The Poem:
“Stop being such a bore, you don’t want to get ignored,” their voices holler for the hundredth time, to feel like a scarlet letter amidst creeping thymes.
I know, I’ve climbed too far to watch some command spitting sleazes tell me what my values are worth, but then again loneliness is known to water the hearth.
The fear of being left alone, and questioning everything I own. When will I be able to make a stand for myself? Without having to constantly feel like a feeble elf.
To have to be stuck with the “cool kids”, in order to be noticed. The unspeakable things they like to do, the calamitous clamour as I try to skew.
The pressure bottling up inside me like the deuce, making me the next victim with the noose. Like me, many others have the same rifle pressed against their heads, an internal war in their miniscule minds of myraids.
A world of colossal galore, yet children still feel so alone. To be caught up in the trappings of what others speak, dialogues serpentine as they let out a frustrated shriek.
Scared to win, scared to lose, why do we let others choose? If our decisions make us, why are we letting others discuss.
It’s the profound impact of our peers, to have to change yourself in order to avoid a vale of tears. The phobia of being the odd one out and being rejected, while everyone else is enjoying themselves unaffected.
We need to teach kids how to say no, how to stand up for themsleves and let one go. Only then can we vanquish the evil of peer pressure, every young soul igniting blithesomely from their fissures.
If you liked it, let me know. I might develop a seperate page for my poems on this blog, if you enjoy them! As always, if there is anything specific you want me to write about, feel free to drop them in the comments below! 🙂
